The UK is facing a cybersecurity talent crisis, with nearly half (44%) of businesses struggling to find professionals equipped to combat the evolving cyber threat landscape, according to the UK Government’s Cyber Security Skills in the UK Labour Market 2024 report. On January 18, some of the country’s brightest cybersecurity hopefuls went head-to-head in a high-stakes Capture the Flag (CTF) challenge organised by the SANS Institute and the UK Government. More than just a competition, the event was a proving ground where participants demonstrated their ability to tackle real-world cyber threats, refining their technical skills in an environment designed to simulate the high-pressure reality of cyber defence.

With the UK remaining a prime target for cybercriminals, the event underscored the importance of hands-on training in preparing the next wave of cyber professionals. Throughout the competition, participants generated a staggering 1.6TB of data while working through intricate security challenges that tested their expertise in threat detection, incident response, cryptography, and ethical hacking.
Beyond the technical challenges, teamwork and strategic thinking played a crucial role in the event’s outcome. Participants were required to collaborate under pressure, mimicking the real-world dynamics of cybersecurity response teams. The competition culminated in Team 2 emerging victorious, showcasing exceptional problem-solving and resilience.

Keynote: Staying Ahead of Cyber Threats: Muhammad Yahya Patel, Lead Security Engineer at Check Point’s Office of the CTO, introduced participants to ThreatCloud, a prevention-first cybersecurity platform, and shared guidance on careers in cyber threat intelligence and incident response.
Spotlight on SecureAcademy: Participants learned about Check Point’s SecureAcademy, a global initiative offering free cybersecurity training and certifications. Already integrated with leading universities, the programme has trained thousands of students worldwide.
Career Inspiration: Pauline Brusset, Associate Sales Engineer at Check Point Software, shared her personal journey into cybersecurity, highlighting the diverse and accessible career pathways in the industry.

For many competitors, the event marked just the beginning of their cybersecurity journeys. Some will now be considered for the UK Cyber Team, which will go on to represent the nation in international cybersecurity challenges later this year.
